Episode 29: J-Horror

Published by brian under Podcast, Uncategorized

Episode 29

This week, Kara aka SmartyLibrarian and Brian talk about J-Horror, a decade-old, sub-genre of scary Japanese movies. It’s best to be familiar with The Ring, either the original or the American remake to get a handle on the discussion.

Movies we discuss:

  • The Ring
  • Dark Water
  • Ju-On (The Grudge)
  • The Pulse
  • Shikoku
  • Audition

It’s time to get in touch with some wet, creepy ghosts…

Next time: C.S. Lewis and Narnia

A Little Site Maintenance

Published by brian under Uncategorized

Just a quick note that I’ll be fiddling with the look of this site over the next week or so.  The old WP Theme finally broke, and I’ve got to come up with something else.

Retrogasmic 1.6 – All Good Things

Published by drey under Uncategorized

Alas, we come to the end of my six-column run here on Secure Immaturity. Thank you Wil and Brian for the opportunity to write something interesting under deadline. It has been both a fantastic exercise and a pleasure.

As threatened in earlier columns, today we shall discuss interactive fiction. And by “discuss”, I mean we’re going to actually do it. Interactive fiction is essentially participating in the process of telling a story rather than reading a finished one. Continue Reading »

The Adventures of Pete and Pete

Published by brian under Uncategorized

In my mind, Nickelodeon has only aired one one good live action show – The Adventures of Pete and Pete. Pete and Pete follows two brothers on through adventures in the town of Wellsville with its menagerie of strange citizens. Over a decade later, the show still holds up, and while some of the kid humor is a little tired, the show’s language sparkles. Pete and Pete goes for smart laughs and succeeds most of the time.

Full episodes have been posted to Google Video for as long as that lasts. Here are two I saw today.

King of the Road

The Wrigley family goes on vacation to the Hoover Dam while obsessively making good time. This was the first episode of the series, and it’s impressive how well developed it was.

I can sympathize with Pete’s mom. I always have to find the perfect spot, too.

35 Hours

Pete and Pete’s parents leave them alone in the house for a weekend. Instead of trashing the house or making a mess, Little Pete outright sells their house to another family after Big Pete ditches him for a girl.

Best Line:

“She had a way of tugging her earlobes that killed me.”

Retrogasmic 1.4 – You Have the Power of Ameritrash

Published by drey under Uncategorized

Retrogasmic is a monthly column designed to educate you about all-but-forgotten geeky shit and why you should care about it today.

——

“I’m into board games.” This phrase alone will stop me in my tracks on any online dating site. It is the moral equivalent of perfume infused with geek pheromones. It is a freak flag whipping in a wind traveled from exotic islands. It is almost always too good to be true, because, inevitably, “I think Monopoly is awesome!” Also, “I love to laugh!”

No. Just… no. Continue Reading »
